The Chinese mobile phone market is as robust as ever, moving at a much faster pace that what we see in the US and UK markets. You've almost certainly heard of Huawei (infamously in the news throughout 2019), and also perhaps Xiaomi, Vivo, or Oppo. While dominating the Asian markets, these mobile brands are less often seen in the world controlled by AT&T, T-Mobile, EE, and Vodaphone.
That's a shame, because many Chinese mobiles pack a huge punch at a relatively inexpensive cost.
If you're only familiar with Samsung, LG, and Moto, you're probably used to buying it along with signing a 1 or 2 year contract at $50-$100+ per month, leaving your actual cost of ownership in the thousands. Many of these Chinese phone models can be be purchased outright in the $200 to $500 range with nearly the same specs as their western competitors! At this price, you can probably afford to upgrade much more often.
Not the Compatibility Risk it Used to Be
The Chinese brands all run Google's Android operating system, which means that at the core they are fully compatible with all the apps you already use. These days, the radio chips support a vast array of signal frequencies, meaning they are more likely than not to connect to your local carrier's cell towers at full speed.
In most cases, a Chinese mobile only needs a SIM card and (if you don't speak Chinese) to select English during the initial set up. If you've purchased the "Global ROM" or "International Version", you're probably ready to go; but if you got your hands on a "Chinese Mainland" version you likely need to install the Google Play Store, which isn't generally used inside China.
Once finished, you're all set - the phone will operate like any other mobile!
