For the short distance commuter the electric scooter is practical, efficient, and relatively easy on the bank balance.
Electric scooters are also a durable and environmentally friendly mode of transport to travel short daily distances. But before you start scooting around town, you might have noticed that as the electric scooter market widens, we are facing a baffling array of models and brands to choose from.
Before committing to the purchase of an escooter a few factors should be considered first. Price, portability, speed, design and weight all should be compared before hitting the streets on your new scooter. How long do we expect the battery to last? What kind of distances are we looking to travel? To make the choice a bit easier we’re taking a look at 5 of the best electric scooters on the market right now and broken down the basic specs so you don’t have to.
First up is the HX Electric Scooter weighing in at a super-lightweight 10kg with the ability to take a load up to 120kg. This light and strong scooter is finished in black and folds down into an easily transportable self-locking unit that can slip easily into a standard daypack. It runs from an 18650 power replaceable battery and the HX retails at an attractive $373. This low cost electric scooter is a good entry level product to hit the streets with.
Next, the Xiaomi Qicycle Euni ES808 scoots up to 20km an hour and weighs 13.2kg. It has an 8inch pneumatic tire to the front and an air core tire to the rear. Like most other escooters the ES808 electric scooter travels up slopes with a gradient of 12 degrees. The handlebar and frame withstood 5000 simulated tests and has a super durable body made of aircraft-grade alloy strong enough to withstand three times its 100kg load. For under $500, the ES808 electric scooter is a solid choice.
Ninebot by Segway ES2 Smart Electric Scooter can travel at speeds up to 25km an hour for a distance of 25kms. But the Ninebot is not only built for speed. This escooter boasts rear shock absorbers for a comfortable ride and has cool ambient and rear lights for visibility on the streets. With a one-click folding the system the 12.5kg unit can be folded away for use on public inner-city transportation before unfolding and hitting the streets. At $349 the price-point with this escooter is sweet too. This is a recommended model.
The Xiaomi Mijia M365 Electric Scooter has the lowest price point of our five at $339, and it's also a best seller worldwide. This high quality product delivers just over 18 miles of distance per charge and runs at a top speed of 25km an hour. Powered by a 250W motor this electric scooter has two pneumatic 8.5inch tires and a large battery capacity that takes only 2-3 hours to reach full charge. This is another good entry level product at a low price point.
The more higher end product in our list and perhaps the most fancy at $689, is the Xiaomi HIMO H1 Portable Folding Two-Wheel Electric Scooter. This scooter, folding down to an A3 size, can be taken virtually anywhere so whether you are traveling on the subway, or need to stow it away in the trunk of your car, transportability is not a problem. The battery won’t die on you until you’ve clocked 20 km and it has a cool waterproof digital instrument display showing headlight status, battery status, and speed. Night riding is safe with headlights and the whole scooter is a reassuringly safe 13kg with a load capacity of 90kg. This escooter along with the other 4 and more can be viewed here.
